UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria)

Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) are the design and construction standards published by the U.S. Department of Defense that govern military construction and renovation projects for all branches of service. UFC documents replace earlier separate Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps design manuals.

What Engineers Mean by UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria)

There are hundreds of UFC documents covering everything from site planning (UFC 3-201-01) and structural engineering (UFC 3-301-01) to MEP systems (UFC 3-400-series), antiterrorism/force protection (UFC 4-010-01), and specialized facilities such as aircraft hangars, laboratories, and ammunition storage. UFC 3-301-01 governs structural design and references ASCE 7 loads with military-specific modifications. UFC 3-501-01 governs electrical engineering. Projects on military installations require the design team to follow applicable UFCs in addition to local codes, which often results in more stringent design requirements.
