A Professional Engineer (PE) is a licensed engineer who has met the education, experience, and examination requirements to practice engineering and legally sign and seal engineering documents. Only a licensed PE can stamp the structural, MEP, civil, and geotechnical drawings that building departments require.
Licensure is state-specific — a PE licensed in Arizona must obtain a separate license to practice in California, though most states participate in comity agreements that streamline the process. For Apex Grid projects, the responsible individual's current license, firm authorization, discipline, and AHJ requirements are verified before any seal or stamp is contemplated. The PE's stamp on a set of drawings is a legal representation that the engineer has reviewed the design and accepts professional responsibility for it. Unlicensed persons cannot legally perform or represent engineering services in most states.
