CAD (Computer-Aided Design)

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the use of software to create, modify, and document engineering drawings and models. CAD replaced manual drafting and is the standard tool for producing permit drawings, construction documents, and coordination drawings across all engineering disciplines.

What Engineers Mean by CAD (Computer-Aided Design)

Two-dimensional CAD (AutoCAD, MicroStation) produces flat plans, sections, and details — the format most commonly used for permit submissions. Three-dimensional CAD and BIM software (Revit, Navisworks) add geometry, data, and clash detection capabilities. Engineers use CAD to produce structural framing plans, MEP floor plans, civil grading and utility plans, and all associated details and schedules. The CAD file format (.DWG, .DXF, .RVT) is significant because other project team members and contractors need to work with the files during coordination and construction.
