A Request for Information (RFI) is a formal written question submitted by a contractor to the design team during construction, asking for clarification on the drawings, specifications, or project requirements. RFIs are a standard part of the construction administration process.
RFIs arise when the contractor encounters a condition not fully addressed in the construction documents — a conflict between structural and MEP drawings, a missing dimension, or an unclear specification. The design engineer reviews the RFI and issues a written response, which may include a revised detail, a clarification, or direction to proceed per the drawings. RFI responses become part of the project record and can have cost or schedule implications.
