ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers)

ASHRAE is the professional society that publishes the standards governing HVAC, refrigeration, building energy performance, and indoor air quality used throughout the engineering and construction industry. Key ASHRAE standards include 62.1 (ventilation), 90.1 (energy efficiency), and 55 (thermal comfort).

What Engineers Mean by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers)

ASHRAE 62.1 specifies minimum outside air ventilation rates for commercial buildings and is referenced by the IBC and most mechanical codes as the ventilation standard. ASHRAE 90.1 is the model energy standard for commercial buildings adopted in most states not using Title 24, setting efficiency minimums for HVAC, lighting, and the building envelope. ASHRAE Standard 55 defines the conditions for acceptable thermal comfort in occupied spaces. ASHRAE also publishes the Handbook of Fundamentals and HVAC Applications, which are the primary engineering references for load calculations, duct design, and system selection.
