MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing)

MEP refers to the three primary building systems engineering disciplines: Mechanical (HVAC), Electrical (power distribution, lighting), and Plumbing (domestic water, sanitary, gas). On most commercial projects all three disciplines must be engineered, permitted, and coordinated together.

What Engineers Mean by MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing)

MEP systems must fit within the available floor-to-floor height, coordinate around structural framing, and reach every area of the building while meeting code. An MEP engineer sizes the mechanical equipment, determines duct and pipe routing, designs the electrical service and distribution, and sizes all plumbing systems. MEP drawings are reviewed by the AHJ as part of the building permit. On complex projects, BIM coordination sessions ensure that MEP systems don't clash with structural elements or each other.
