A sanitary riser diagram is a schematic drawing showing the vertical arrangement of plumbing waste and vent pipes through a multi-story building, depicting how each fixture group connects to the building drain and ultimately to the sanitary sewer. Riser diagrams are required on permit submittals for multi-story commercial and residential buildings.
The riser diagram shows the drain, waste, and vent (DWV) pipe sizes, slopes, cleanout locations, and the path of the main building drain to the sewer. It allows the plumbing engineer and inspector to verify that venting is properly arranged to maintain trap seal and prevent sewer gas entry, that pipes are sized for the fixture unit loading, and that the pipe routing is practical given the building structure. In tall buildings, offsets in waste stacks must be engineered to prevent excessive negative pressure in the stack.
