Medical Gas System

Medical gas systems distribute piped oxygen, medical air, nitrous oxide, vacuum, and other specialty gases throughout healthcare facilities to patient care areas. Medical gas systems are life-safety systems regulated by NFPA 99 and must be designed, installed, and tested by certified personnel.

What Engineers Mean by Medical Gas System

The primary medical gases are oxygen (O2) for respiratory support, medical air (oil-free compressed air) for equipment, nitrous oxide (N2O) for anesthesia, nitrogen (N2) for surgical tools, and waste anesthetic gas disposal (WAGD). Each gas has its own color-coded piping, dedicated shutoffs, and alarm system. NFPA 99 defines the health care facility categories (Category 1, 2, 3, 4) and the design and testing requirements for each. Medical gas outlets, source equipment, master alarm panels, and zone valve boxes all require specific design and installation.
