A grade beam is a horizontal reinforced concrete beam constructed at grade level (at or just below the ground surface) that connects foundation piers or piles and carries wall loads to the deep foundation elements. Grade beams also tie isolated footings together to prevent differential movement under seismic loads.
In deep foundation systems, the grade beam spans between drilled piers or driven piles, carrying load from the wall or columns above and distributing it to the foundation elements below. In shallow foundation systems, grade beams between spread footings are required by seismic design codes to prevent footings from spreading apart or rotating during a seismic event. Grade beams are reinforced at both top and bottom to resist the bending forces from the loads above and the soil reactions below. The structural engineer sizes the grade beam for flexure and shear and details the reinforcement to ensure continuity with the footing or pile cap.
