EV Charging (Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure)

EV charging infrastructure provides electrical power to charge plug-in electric vehicles and includes the EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), the branch circuit wiring, and the electrical service capacity to support the charging loads. Many jurisdictions now require EV-ready or EV-capable infrastructure as a condition of new construction permits.

What Engineers Mean by EV Charging (Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure)

EV charging is classified by Level 1 (120V, 1.4–1.9 kW — slow overnight charging), Level 2 (208–240V, 7–22 kW — the most common commercial and residential EVSE), and Level 3 / DC Fast Charging (up to 350 kW — rapid charging for commercial fleets and public stations). The electrical engineer sizes the dedicated circuits, selects the appropriate EVSE, and verifies that the electrical service and distribution equipment have sufficient capacity for the added EV load. California Title 24 and many state energy codes require EV-ready conduit and panel capacity for new residential and commercial construction. Fleet charging for warehouses, bus depots, and municipal facilities requires careful load management to avoid costly demand charges.
