What Should You Know About Hotel Pool Structural Design?

By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15

Hotel pools need the vessel engineered for water weight and dynamic loads, the supporting structure designed for the concentrated load, and waterproofing details that protect everything below. Coordinate pool and building structure as one system from schematic design.

The concise answer

Hotel pools need the vessel engineered for water weight and dynamic loads, the supporting structure designed for the concentrated load, and waterproofing details that protect everything below. Water is brutally heavy and utterly unforgiving of detailing mistakes. A pool done right is invisible — guests swim, rooms below stay dry, and nobody thinks about it. A pool done wrong announces itself with cracks, leaks, and closures.

The load nobody underestimates twice

Three hundred thousand pounds of water changes the structural design of whatever sits beneath it. The supporting frame needs the strength, the stiffness to limit deflection (because deflection cracks pool shells), and the detailing to handle a load that never goes away. Pool location is a structural decision. Ground-level pools on grade are simplest; elevated pools demand that the building frame be designed around them from the start. Moving a pool late in design means re-engineering the structure below it.

Pools that stay dry underneath

Waterproofing is where pool projects are won or lost. The details matter more than the products. My hotel pool checklist:

  • Engineer the vessel and the supporting structure as one coordinated system
  • Design for stiffness: limit deflection so the pool shell doesn't crack
  • Detail waterproofing and drainage as a system, not an afterthought
  • Plan the MEP: filtration, heating, chemical treatment, and dehumidification
  • Specify corrosion-resistant materials for indoor pool environments

What else do project teams ask?

How heavy is a hotel pool?
Water weighs about 62 pounds per cubic foot — a 20-by-40-foot pool six feet deep holds roughly 300,000 pounds of water. That load concentrates on the structure below, which is why pool location drives structural design.
Can a pool go on an upper floor or roof?
Yes, with proper engineering — the structure below must be designed for the pool's weight plus dynamic loads, and waterproofing becomes critical because a leak affects occupied space. It's done regularly, but it's never casual.
What causes pool leaks into the building?
Failed waterproofing details, structural movement cracking the shell, and poor drainage around the pool deck. The fix is in the details: proper waterproofing systems, movement joints, and deck drainage designed together.
Do hotel pools need special MEP?
Yes — pool filtration, heating, chemical treatment, and dehumidification for indoor pools are significant MEP systems. Indoor pool rooms also need corrosion-resistant construction because chlorinated air attacks everything.
