How Is a Campus Microgrid Engineered for Energy Resilience?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
Campus microgrids are engineered around solar plus battery storage sized to the critical load profile, millisecond islanding switchgear with mode-switching protection, and utility interconnection agreements that make the system pay daily and survive outages.

Solar, Storage, and Generator Sizing
Photovoltaic sizing balances roof and land availability against the campus load shape: solar earns through daytime energy offset and demand reduction, with carport and ground-mount arrays common where roof space is limited. The engineer models production against 15-minute interval load data, because a solar array that overproduces at noon and starves the 6 p.m. peak needs storage to be valuable. Battery sizing follows the use case: peak-shaving batteries cycle daily for demand-charge savings, while resilience batteries hold reserve for islanding, and the design separates the two duties so economics never drain the emergency reserve. Generators complete the duration story. The microgrid controller treats dispatchable generation as the firm capacity behind variable solar and finite storage, with fuel storage sized for the design outage. Combined heat and power units can serve double duty, feeding the campus thermal loop while generating electricity, which suits universities with central plants. Every resource gets modeled in both grid-connected and islanded operation, because equipment that behaves in one mode can misbehave in the other.
Islanding Controls, Protection, and Utility Interconnection
The microgrid controller is the brain: it monitors the utility connection, manages the seamless transition to island mode, dispatches resources economically in normal operation, and sheds non-critical loads automatically when islanded. The engineer specifies the controller's functions against the campus priorities, because a controller optimized only for bill savings will make wrong choices during the outage. Communications between the controller, switchgear, inverters, and generators ride redundant paths, often on the campus fiber network with backup. Protection engineering handles the two-mode problem: relay settings for grid-connected fault levels differ from islanded fault levels, so the design uses adaptive settings groups switched by the controller. The utility interconnection study determines what the campus may export, what protection the utility demands, and what standby and interconnection charges apply, and the engineer engages the utility early because interconnection queues and study timelines routinely exceed equipment lead times. Battery storage permitting with the fire marshal, separation, suppression, and ventilation for the battery energy storage system, runs in parallel.
Campus Microgrid Design Checklist
Use this checklist during design and plan check: • Critical load profile from interval data defining what the microgrid must carry islanded • Solar sized against load shape with storage bridging production to evening peak • Battery duties separated: daily cycling for economics, reserve held for resilience • Islanding switchgear with millisecond separation and re-synchronization design • Adaptive protection settings for grid-connected versus islanded fault levels • Utility interconnection engaged early: export limits, charges, and study timelines • Battery energy storage permitted with fire marshal: separation, suppression, ventilation • Microgrid controller specified for economic dispatch plus island survival priorities
