Structural drawings communicate the load-carrying design to permit reviewers and builders. Here's what a complete set includes and why each sheet matters.

Structural General Notes

The general notes sheet establishes the design basis for the entire set. Reviewers read this sheet first to confirm the design meets code before checking individual elements.

Foundation Plan

The foundation plan shows the layout of footings, foundation walls, slabs, piers, and grade beams. It locates each element in plan, references the details that define its construction, and coordinates with the soil bearing values from the geotechnical report. This is where the building's loads transfer into the ground.

Framing Plans

Framing plans show the structural members at each level — floor framing, roof framing, and any intermediate levels. They identify beams, joists, columns, headers, and the lateral system (shear walls or braced frames), with member sizes and spacing called out. There is generally one framing plan per level.

Structural Details

Details are enlarged drawings showing exactly how members connect and how critical assemblies are built — beam-to-column connections, holdowns, base plates, reinforcing at openings, and typical construction conditions. Details translate the plans into buildable instructions and are essential for both the contractor and the inspector.

Schedules

Schedules organize repetitive information into tables — for example, a footing schedule, column schedule, or shear wall schedule. Instead of labeling every element individually, the plan references a schedule tag, and the schedule lists the size and reinforcing for each type. This keeps the drawings clean and consistent.
