The Building Systems That Make a Building Work
MEP engineering covers the three building systems disciplines — Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing — that make buildings habitable, functional, and code-compliant. Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering covers heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Electrical Engineering
Electrical engineering covers power distribution from the utility service entrance through the building's panels, feeders, and branch circuits. This includes electrical load calculations, service sizing, panel schedules, one-line diagrams, lighting design, emergency power systems (generators, transfer switches, UPS), EV charging infrastructure, solar PV interconnection, and battery energy storage. Electrical engineers ensure the building has adequate power capacity, proper protection, and code-compliant wiring design for all connected loads.
Plumbing Engineering
Plumbing engineering covers domestic cold and hot water distribution, sanitary waste and vent systems, storm drainage, gas piping, and specialty systems like medical gas, laboratory gas, or commercial kitchen utilities. Plumbing engineers size piping systems, verify code-required fixture counts, coordinate roof drain locations with structural, and design specialty systems to applicable standards.
Why Integrated MEP Matters
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems share the same space inside a building — above ceilings, in walls, in mechanical rooms and electrical rooms. When these systems are coordinated by a single MEP engineering team (or a tightly coordinated set of disciplines), conflicts are caught on paper instead of in the field. When Do You Need MEP Engineering?
Any project that modifies existing building systems or installs new ones requires MEP engineering for the permit.
