How Are Windrow Composting Operations Engineered and Built?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
Windrow composting operations are engineered around the turner: windrow geometry matched to the equipment, heavy-duty drained pads graded to leachate collection, zoned site layout from receiving through curing, and traffic patterns sized from throughput and residence-time arithmetic.

Pad Layout, Grades, and Equipment Access
The site plan starts with the turner. Self-propelled turners need a clear lane wider than the windrow with room to enter and exit each row; tow-behind or straddle turners need matching geometry. The engineer lays out rows on a module — windrow plus working aisle — and verifies the turning radius at the row ends, because a turner that cannot turn around at the end of a row is a very expensive mistake. Access roads are designed for the delivery trucks and loaders with all-weather surfacing and grades that trucks can climb when loaded. Grades serve two masters: equipment and water. The pad is graded at one to two percent toward the leachate collection system — enough to move water, gentle enough for equipment — with no birdbaths where water can pond and go anaerobic. The engineer checks the finished grades against the equipment's operating limits and details the transitions between zones so loaders do not bottom out. In freeze-thaw climates the pavement section and drainage get extra attention, since a heaved pad destroys the drainage grades the permit depends on.
Drainage, Stormwater Separation, and Fire Breaks
Every windrow row drains to the leachate system, and every roof, road, and upgradient slope drains to stormwater — the engineer enforces that separation with berms, curbs, and ditches drawn on the grading plan. Windrow rows themselves are crowned or sloped so rain sheds off the pile surface rather than soaking through and generating excess leachate. Perimeter ditches intercept off-site run-on before it reaches the pad, because run-on is the fastest way to overwhelm a leachate system during a storm. Fire protection is a layout discipline as much as an equipment one. Windrows are limited in length and separated by fire breaks so a spontaneous-combustion event in one row cannot take the whole site; the engineer coordinates the break widths with the fire marshal, who may have specific requirements for compost storage. Access lanes double as fire apparatus access, and the site plan shows hydrant or water-supply locations with the turning space a tender needs. Where the facility sits in unincorporated county land, the county fire authority's access and water-supply standards — often stricter than a city's for rural sites — govern the layout.
Windrow Composting Design Checklist
Use this checklist before the windrow site plan is finalized: • Turner model selected; windrow width, height, and row spacing matched to the equipment • Number of active rows calculated from daily throughput and residence time • Pad pavement section designed for loader and turner axle loads in wet conditions • Pad graded one to two percent to leachate collection with no ponding areas • Contact water and non-contact stormwater separated by berms, curbs, and ditches • Fire breaks between windrow rows coordinated with the fire marshal's requirements • Traffic pattern separates raw feedstock from finished compost; turning radii verified • Receiving, grinding, active, curing, and screening zones each sized and zoned on the plan
