An engineering retainer or deposit is an agreed payment collected before or during professional services and applied according to the contract. The proposal should say whether it is an advance against a fixed fee, a balance for time-based work, or a separate nonrefundable commitment, and should explain invoices, replenishment, unused balances, cancellation, and expenses. It does not purchase a seal, approval, or a particular technical conclusion. The engineer must still independently review the scope, and the client remains responsible for AHJ fees and decisions unless the agreement expressly says otherwise.
