How Is Signage Engineered for Storage Facility Branding?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
Storage facility signage is engineered as a visibility system: road-legible monument signs with wind-rated structures, code-compliant electrical feeds for all illuminated signs, and complete wayfinding from the gate to each unit door.

Monument Signs: Visibility and Structure
Visibility engineering sets the monument sign's size: letter height readable at the road's design speed, high-contrast colors, and illumination that keeps the message legible after dark. The sign is sited for the longest possible sight distance within the setback and sight-triangle rules, and landscaping is kept below the sign face so a hedge does not swallow the bottom line in two years. Structural design treats the monument sign as a small building. The foundation is sized for overturning under the code wind pressure on the sign face, the cabinet or pylon structure is detailed with drainage so it does not become a water trap, and anchor bolts and base plates go on the structural drawings. Electrical conduit is stubbed to the sign location before the surrounding work is finished, because trenching to a finished monument sign is pure waste.
Building, Wayfinding, and Electrical Design
Building signage identifies the office and the main storage buildings with channel letters or cabinets sized to the viewing distance from the drive aisles. Mounting details keep water out of the wall assembly: standoffs, sealed penetrations, and flashing that the architect reviews. Raceways and transformers are concealed or screened so the sign reads clean in daylight. Wayfinding is the tenant-experience layer: building letters or numbers visible from the aisles, unit number ranges at each building entry, directional signs at every decision point, and gate and office identification that a first-time visitor cannot miss. Electrically, each illuminated sign gets its own circuit with a readily accessible disconnect, photocell or time-clock control for illumination hours, and LED sources specified for efficiency and rated life. The sign code submittal documents size, height, and brightness for every sign on the site.
Storage Facility Signage Design Checklist
Use this checklist during design and plan check: • Monument sign sized and placed for legibility at road speed within setbacks • Sign structure and foundation designed for code wind loads with drainage • Electrical conduit to sign locations installed before surrounding work finishes • Building signs mounted with sealed penetrations and concealed raceways • Wayfinding covering gate, office, buildings, and unit ranges at decision points • Reflective or illuminated wayfinding for after-dark tenant visits • Dedicated sign circuits with disconnects and photocell or time-clock control • Full sign package documented for size, height, and illumination code limits
