How Is a Lambing Barn Designed to Protect Newborn Lambs?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
A lambing barn is engineered around individual lambing jugs with draft-free, high-level ventilation, radiant heat zoned over occupied jugs instead of dangerous heat lamps, and jug-row layouts with service aisles — keeping newborn lambs warm and dry without trapping ammonia or chilling them.

Jug Layout and Pen Construction
The engineer sizes the jug inventory to the lambing curve: enough individual pens for the peak days of the lambing window, plus a margin, because ewes do not lamb on a schedule. Jugs are typically built from portable panels so the layout can flex — individual jugs during peak, opened into group pens as lambs age out. Solid lower panels to about 30 inches block drafts at lamb height while open tops let the shepherd see every pen from the aisle. The engineer details gates with slam latches and no protruding hardware that could injure a ewe pushing through. Floors in the lambing area need to drain and to bed deeply. A sloped concrete slab with a center or side drain lets the crew wash between groups, while deep straw bedding over the slab gives lambs insulation from the cold floor. The engineer pitches the slab to the drains, keeps the drains outside the jug footprints where possible, and sizes the water supply for washdown plus the ewes' drinking demand, which spikes during lactation.
Radiant Heat and Winter Ventilation
Radiant heat is selected and zoned like a process system. The engineer calculates the heat loss of the jug area at design winter conditions, selects infrared tube heaters or radiant panels with clearances that keep all hot surfaces well above bedding and animal reach, and mounts them over the jug rows rather than the aisles. Thermostatic control holds the jug zone in the target range for newborns, with the engineer setting the sensor height at lamb level — a thermostat at human height lies about conditions at the floor. Night setback is modest; the goal is steady warmth, not cycling. Winter ventilation is sized to minimum rates that control moisture without creating drafts. The engineer designs adjustable inlets — baffled eave inlets or slot inlets under the eaves — that can be throttled as temperatures fall, paired with ridge exhaust or variable-speed fans on thermostats. On the coldest nights the system runs at its minimum, exchanging just enough air to keep humidity and ammonia down. The engineer verifies the design against the barn's actual airtightness, because a leaky old barn ventilates itself (and freezes the lambs), while a tight new one needs the designed system to do the work.
Lambing Barn Engineering Checklist
Use this checklist before lambing season's permit set is finalized: • Jug count sized to peak lambing days plus margin; portable panels for layout flexibility • Solid lower partitions to lamb-shoulder height; one-handed gates with safe hardware • Radiant heat over jug rows, zoned to occupied areas, thermostats sensing at lamb level • No clamp heat lamps anywhere in the design — fire risk eliminated by equipment choice • High-level baffled inlets throwing air across the ceiling, never down onto jugs • Minimum winter ventilation rates that control moisture and ammonia without drafts • Sloped washable slab with drains outside jug footprints; water sized for washdown and lactation demand • Emergency heat backup plan for power outages during the lambing window
