How Is Self-Storage Site Lighting Designed for Full Night Safety?

By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15

Self-storage site lighting is engineered from a photometric plan using full-cutoff LED fixtures on a calculated layout for uniform, glare-free illumination of aisles, doors, and gates, with controls that balance security, neighbor trespass limits, and energy cost.

Photometric Planning and Fixture Selection

Photometric planning starts with a site model: building footprints, pole locations, mounting heights, and fixture photometry files. The software calculates maintained foot-candle levels at the ground plane and produces uniformity ratios the engineer can defend. Drive aisles typically target moderate, even levels while unit door faces get slightly higher emphasis so tenants can see locks and keypads clearly. Fixture selection follows the plan. Full-cutoff LED area lights on poles handle aisles and parking, wall packs wash building faces and door rows, and bollards or low fixtures mark pedestrian paths near the office. Color temperature in the 4000K to 5000K range renders well on cameras and reads as clean and safe. Every fixture should carry a rated life, a surge protection device, and optics matched to its mounting height.

Glare Control, Trespass, and Dark-Sky Limits

Glare control is a safety issue at the gate, where a tenant's headlights already compete with site lighting. Fixtures near the entry are aimed and shielded so drivers approaching the keypad are not staring into a bare LED array. Backlight, uplight, and glare ratings guide the selection so the design meets the project's glare budget from the start. Light trespass is measured at the property line, and many cities now enforce dark-sky or nuisance ordinances with hard foot-candle caps. The engineer runs the photometric model to the fence line and adds house-side shields or lower mounting heights where the model shows spillover. Documenting compliance in the plan set avoids the most common lighting-related plan check comment and the neighbor complaints that follow a bad design.

Self-Storage Site Lighting Design Checklist

Use this checklist during design and plan check: • Photometric plan modeling aisles, doors, gate, and office to property lines • Full-cutoff LED fixtures selected with photometry files for the model • Uniformity ratio that eliminates dark gaps along building faces and doors • Wall packs supplementing poles at unit door rows and blind corners • Glare shielding at the gate approach so drivers and keypads stay visible • Property-line trespass verified against local dark-sky or nuisance limits • Photocell or astronomical time clock plus motion or dimming schedules • Surge protection on poles and circuits coordinated with camera power needs

What else do project teams ask?

How bright should a self-storage site be at night?
Brightness targets vary by area: drive aisles need moderate, even light for vehicle and pedestrian movement, while unit door faces and the gate merit higher emphasis for lock visibility and camera footage. The engineer sets maintained foot-candle targets in the photometric plan based on the governing code and the owner's security goals rather than copying another site's numbers.
What is full-cutoff lighting and why does it matter?
Full-cutoff fixtures emit no light above the horizontal plane, which cuts glare for drivers and keeps light aimed at the ground where it is needed. Most jurisdictions prefer or require them, and they simplify trespass compliance. They also photograph better and read as higher quality to prospective tenants touring at night.
Should site lights stay on all night?
Security lighting generally stays on all night at a reduced level, with motion sensors boosting aisles when activity is detected. Full shutoff is rarely wise for a storage facility because cameras need light for usable footage and dark periods invite trouble. Dimming schedules give most of the energy savings without the security gap.
How does lighting design support the camera system?
Cameras need a minimum light level and reasonable uniformity to produce identifiable footage. The lighting plan should be coordinated with camera locations so no camera stares into darkness or into a glaring fixture. Designing both systems together is far cheaper than relocating cameras or adding fixtures after the site opens.
