How are residential structural engineering fees determined?
Residential structural engineering fees are determined by the home's actual question and the work needed to answer it responsibly. A proposal may cover a limited analysis, an existing-condition assessment, addition or remodel design, permit drawings, calculations, a report, site work, or review responses. House size alone is not enough to establish the scope; construction type, alterations, access, loads, records, jurisdiction, and requested deliverables matter.

Start with the home's decision
Residential requests often use the same words for very different services. A remodel may need a beam detail, a second story may need a whole load-path evaluation, and cracking may need an assessment before anyone designs a repair. I ask what the owner, architect, contractor, lender, insurer, or AHJ needs to decide so the responsible engineer can propose a proportionate deliverable.

- Condition assessment, repair recommendation, letter, report, or permit set
- New design, independent review, correction response, or construction support
- The exact audience and decision the engineering document must support
Existing homes create real fee variables
A residential fee can change when drawings are incomplete, framing is concealed, prior work is undocumented, or the foundation cannot be understood from the available record. Photos and measurements may support a limited review, but the engineer decides whether a site visit, openings, survey, geotechnical information, or testing is necessary. I prefer those limits stated before a homeowner mistakes a preliminary opinion for a design.

Read the fee proposal as a responsibility map
A useful residential proposal says which sheets, calculations, details, report, visit, meetings, and revision cycles are included. It also identifies exclusions such as architecture, survey, geotechnical work, testing, contractor means and methods, and AHJ decisions. I encourage homeowners to ask who is responsible for each handoff, not just whether a document will be stamped.
