How much does load-bearing wall removal cost?

There is no responsible fixed price for removing a load-bearing wall. The structural-engineering proposal and the contractor's proposal cover different work: the engineer investigates the load path and designs eligible permanent support, while the contractor prices demolition, shoring means and methods, labor, materials, protection, and construction. Existing framing, span, reactions, foundations, utilities, finishes, access, and permit requirements drive both scopes, so separate coordinated proposals matter.

The structural engineer's scope

The engineer first determines what the wall supports and how the reaction reaches the foundation. The design may include a beam, header, posts, frame, bearing checks, connections, and foundation work, along with calculations and permit drawings when required. I tell homeowners to ask whether the proposal addresses the complete load path rather than only naming a beam size.

The contractor's scope is separate

The contractor turns the accepted design into construction pricing. That proposal can include demolition, protection of finishes, material procurement, labor, disposal, temporary shoring means and methods, posts or footings, inspections, patching, and coordination with plumbing or electrical trades. Shoring design or engineering observation should be named separately when the project requires it; it should not be silently assumed.

I recommend asking the engineer and contractor to identify conflicts before demolition, because a change in span or support can change both proposals.

Does a structural engineer price the entire wall-removal project?
Usually no. The engineer prices the agreed investigation, structural design, calculations, drawings, and other professional services. The contractor separately prices construction, demolition, temporary support means and methods, materials, trades, finishes, and site logistics unless the proposal expressly says otherwise.
Why should I not rely on a fixed beam price?
Beam size and cost depend on span, loads, material, bearing, posts, foundations, access, fire or finish requirements, and the actual existing framing. A fixed number before those conditions are verified can omit necessary engineering or construction work.
Is temporary shoring included in the engineering fee?
Not automatically. The proposal should state whether the engineer designs or reviews temporary shoring, while the contractor remains responsible for safe construction means and methods unless another written arrangement applies. Ask both parties to define the boundary.
What should I send before requesting proposals?
Send the address, proposed opening, plans, photos of both sides and the spaces above and below, framing and foundation information, prior alterations, utility constraints, desired finishes, and any AHJ comments. The engineer and contractor can then identify missing verification.
