How are engineering change orders priced?

An engineering change order should describe what changed, why it changed, which drawings or calculations are affected, and what added coordination, field work, review, or agency support is required. The parties may agree on a fixed additional fee, time-based billing, or another documented basis after the engineer evaluates the change. A sound change order also states schedule effects, information needed, exclusions, and who can authorize it. It does not allow the engineer to skip independent review, and the AHJ may require additional or different documents regardless of the commercial agreement.

The correct application of engineering change orders starts with the actual project, not a generic promise. Confirm the jurisdiction, adopted code, design scope, existing conditions, required deliverables, and professional responsibility before relying on a conclusion. A responsible engineer documents assumptions and identifies information that still needs verification.

Project type, occupancy, existing construction, site conditions, code edition, agency requirements, and changes made after the original design can change the work. A concise answer is useful for orientation, but the signed or sealed project record must reflect the current scope and the authority's process.
