How Are Graving Docks Engineered for Major Ship Repair Work?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
A graving dock is an excavated watertight concrete basin with a movable dock gate, engineered to be pumped dry against hydrostatic uplift. The floor carries concentrated keel-block ship loads, the gate seals against the sea, dewatering pumps handle the basin volume, and crane rails serve the repair operation — all in a marine corrosion environment.

The concise answer
A graving dock is a concrete basin engineered to be watertight, pumped dry, and loaded with a ship — in that order of structural priority. Uplift governs the floor, the gate governs operability, and the keel-block loads govern the floor's local design. Everything about a graving dock is permanent and unforgiving. The basin can't be easily modified after construction, so the design has to anticipate the largest vessel the dock will ever serve.
Where the engineering actually lives
The basin structure is mass concrete engineering: floor slabs several feet thick, walls designed for earth and water pressure in both the full and dewatered states, and waterstops at every construction joint. Uplift is resisted by the structure's weight, tension piles, or a combination — I verify the uplift case with the same rigor as any gravity design because it's the load that can destroy the dock. The dock gate and dewatering systems are mechanical-marine engineering: gate seating and sealing, pump capacity and redundancy, and the flooding and dewatering sequence. Crane rails along both copings need pile-supported foundations for the repair cranes' wheel loads.
Durability in constant marine exposure
The dock lives in seawater and gets pumped dry repeatedly — wet-dry cycling that accelerates corrosion. I specify marine-grade concrete, coated reinforcement, and protected steel, plus a maintenance plan for the gate seals and coatings. A graving dock is a fifty-year asset; the durability design is what gets it there. Graving dock design priorities.
- Floor and walls engineered for full hydrostatic uplift in the dewatered state
- Dock gate designed as a reliable movable marine structure
- Dewatering pumps sized for the operational schedule with redundancy
- Floor local design for concentrated keel-block and bilge-block loads
- Crane rail foundations on piles along both copings
- Marine durability: concrete, reinforcement, and coatings for wet-dry cycling
