Do I need structural engineering for a garage conversion?
A garage conversion needs a project-specific review of the existing slab and foundation, wall and roof framing, garage-door opening, new windows or doors, floor elevation, moisture exposure, and any change in loads or lateral resistance. The engineer documents only the structural scope supported by verified records and the proposed architectural design.

The garage is an existing structure, not a blank room
Conversion design starts by understanding how the garage carries roof and lateral loads and how its slab, stem walls, footings, and framing were built. I ask clients for photos, measurements, exposed edges, and evidence of settlement or water intrusion when construction records are incomplete, so the responsible engineer can evaluate the existing structure.
- Record slab elevation, cracks, joints, drainage, and visible foundation conditions
- Verify wall, roof, header, and connection framing around the garage opening
- Identify prior additions, alterations, damage, and concealed-condition limits
- Coordinate floor and wall interfaces with the existing dwelling
Openings and floor changes can move loads
Replacing an overhead door with a wall, windows, or a new entry can require new framing and anchorage. Raising or replacing a floor can affect foundation height, moisture detailing, wall bracing, stairs, and connections. The structural design must follow each changed load path instead of assuming a cosmetic infill.

Those requirements belong to the appropriate disciplines and authority; structural engineering should identify interfaces and assumptions without presenting a generic answer as a local approval determination.
