How Do Engineers Design MEP Systems for Float Therapy Suites?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
Float therapy suites get salt-tolerant filtration with UV/ozone sanitation, skin-temperature control, structural design for the water weight, low-noise ventilation, and a rinse shower — all in materials rated for continuous salt exposure.

Salt-water filtration, sanitation, and temperature
The recirculation system is specified for saturated salt water from the start: pumps with salt-duty seals, filters with corrosion-resistant internals, and all wetted piping and valves in materials the salt will not destroy. Flow rates provide the turnover the health authority requires for the vessel, and the equipment is sized for the between-session filtration cycle the operator runs — float centers typically filter aggressively between guests, so the system must turn the volume over in the available changeover window. Sanitation design layers methods because no single approach carries the whole load in a float tank. UV and ozone handle the continuous disinfection duty without adding chemicals the salt would interact with, while the operator's chemical program — where the jurisdiction allows or requires it — is supported by automated monitoring. Temperature control uses a dedicated heater with a sensor in the recirculation loop and tight differential, holding skin temperature steadily; the control alarms on drift so staff catch a failing heater before guests do. All electrical near the tank follows pool-vessel rules: GFCI protection and equipotential bonding.
Structure, room environment, and rinse shower
Structural design treats the float tank as the heavy point load it is. Water at the tank's footprint concentrates thousands of pounds on a small area, so the structural engineer verifies the slab or framing for the full water weight plus the tank, the bather, and dynamic loading — and checks deflection, because a floor that flexes under the tank stresses the vessel and its plumbing connections. On upper floors this verification is critical; on slab-on-grade it confirms bearing and settlement. The suite's HVAC is designed for silence and dryness. Low-velocity ductwork, silencers, and remote equipment keep mechanical noise below perception in a room where guests notice everything, while ventilation manages the humidity from the open tank and the rinse shower so finishes and the building envelope stay dry. Lighting is fully dimmable to darkness with controls at the door and, where the design allows, inside the suite. The rinse shower gets tempered water through an accessible mixing valve, a waterproofed shower assembly, and drainage tied into the suite's plumbing — it is part of the float ritual, so it is engineered to the same standard as the tank.
Float therapy suite design checklist
Float suites work when the water system respects the salt, the structure respects the weight, and the room respects the silence. Standard pool equipment in a float tank corrodes on schedule. • Salt-duty pumps, filters, piping, and valves rated for saturated salt water • UV and ozone sanitation layered with automated monitoring and operator chemical program • Dedicated heater holding skin temperature with tight control and drift alarms • Structural verification for the full water weight, tank, bather, and dynamic loading • Low-noise HVAC with remote equipment, silencers, and humidity control for the open tank • Fully dimmable lighting to darkness with accessible controls • Rinse shower with tempered water, waterproofing, and drainage as part of the suite design • GFCI protection and equipotential bonding per pool-vessel electrical rules
