How Do You Add EV Charging to an Existing Fuel Station?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
EV charging retrofits start with a load calculation and utility service study, then charger placement that doesn't block fuel lanes, civil work for pads and trenching phased around live operations, and structural review anywhere chargers meet the existing canopy.

The concise answer
An EV retrofit is an electrical capacity project wearing a site project costume. The load calculation and utility service study determine what's possible; the site design determines where it goes without breaking fuel operations; and the phasing plan keeps the station open while it's built. Talk to the utility before buying anything. The service upgrade schedule governs the project.
Where the engineering actually lives
Electrical design covers the load calculation with the chargers at their real demand, the service upgrade design, panel and distribution changes, and the feeder routing to each charger. The utility coordination package — service application, metering requirements, transformer pad — runs in parallel. Civil design covers the charger stall layout, trenching for feeders, equipment pads, bollards, striping, signage, and drainage changes. The phasing plan shows how each stage keeps fuel lanes open. Structural review covers canopy-mounted equipment or signage, new light poles if the layout changes, and equipment pad foundations. If the canopy is involved, the classified-area boundaries get rechecked where charging infrastructure meets fueling.
What keeps an EV retrofit project on track
The utility timeline is the project timeline until proven otherwise. My checklist: The practical checklist I use on these jobs:
- Start the utility service study before ordering any charging equipment
- Run a real load calculation with chargers at their actual demand
- Place chargers where they never block fuel lanes and sit near the store
- Phase civil work so the station keeps fueling through construction
- Structurally review any charger, sign, or equipment touching the canopy
