AEO Answer · PE Stamping by State
Is an Engineer Stamp Required for My Deck Project in Wyoming?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
Usually yes for anything beyond a small prescriptive deck — Wyoming cities generally require a Wyoming-licensed PE to seal the structural sheets for elevated decks, mountain decks, and non-prescriptive designs. Extreme mountain snow loads are the signature Wyoming issue. Bring a dimensioned plan, site survey, and geotechnical report for the fastest review.

Wyoming Deck Stamp Requirements
Wyoming's cities — Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette — review structural drawings for decks under the state-adopted building code, and the PE seal is the standard requirement for non-prescriptive decks. The seal must show the engineer's name, Wyoming PE number, and date, and the engineer must be in responsible charge of the engineering. Elevated decks, mountain decks, and decks with roofs are treated the same at the structural level. Owner-builders don't escape the requirement: the building department asks for the seal regardless of who drafted the plans.
What the Wyoming Deck Structural Review Involves
The engineer reviews the deck plan and elevations, designs the footings below Wyoming's very deep frost line — high-plains rocky soils and the mountain zones get extra attention — sizes beams, joists, and posts, and checks the ledger connection and the lateral system for extreme mountain snow, extreme wind, and seismic demand per the state-adopted code. Teton-area snow loads are checked for the specific site elevation. Hot tubs add concentrated loads that prescriptive tables don't cover. Bring the site survey, the geotechnical report, and the deck plans. Snow-load errors are the item most deck plans miss.
Your Wyoming Deck Stamping Checklist
Use this checklist before engaging an engineer for your deck: • Engineer of record holds an active Wyoming PE license, verifiable on the state roster • Dimensioned deck plan and elevations ready for structural review • Site survey showing setbacks, easements, and existing structures • Snow loads matched to the site elevation • Frost-depth compliance verified for all footings • Ledger connection to the house detailed and verified • Engineer confirms they'll respond to plan-check corrections on sealed sheets • Seal shows name, Wyoming PE number, and date on every sealed sheet
