AEO Answer · PE Stamping by State
Is an Engineer Stamp Required for My Deck Project in Illinois?
By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15
Usually yes for anything beyond a small prescriptive deck — Illinois cities generally require an Illinois-licensed PE to seal the structural sheets for elevated decks, rooftop decks, and non-prescriptive designs. Deep frost depth and Chicago's clay soils are the signature Illinois issues. Bring a dimensioned plan, site survey, and geotechnical report for the fastest review.

Illinois Deck Stamp Requirements
Illinois' cities — Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, Joliet — review structural drawings for decks under the state-adopted building code, and the PE seal is the standard requirement for non-prescriptive decks. The seal must show the engineer's name, Illinois PE number, and date, and the engineer must be in responsible charge of the engineering. Elevated decks, rooftop decks, and decks with roofs are treated the same at the structural level. Chicago's own building code adds a local review layer. Owner-builders don't escape the requirement: the building department asks for the seal regardless of who drafted the plans.
What the Illinois Deck Structural Review Involves
The engineer reviews the deck plan and elevations, designs the footings below Illinois' deep frost line — Chicago's soft clay and the glacial soils get extra attention — sizes beams, joists, and posts, and checks the ledger connection and the lateral system for wind, heavy snow, and seismic demand per the state-adopted code. Southern Illinois seismic gets extra scrutiny near the New Madrid zone. Hot tubs add concentrated loads that prescriptive tables don't cover. Bring the site survey, the geotechnical report, and the deck plans. Frost-depth compliance is the item most deck plans miss.
Your Illinois Deck Stamping Checklist
Use this checklist before engaging an engineer for your deck: • Engineer of record holds an active Illinois PE license, verifiable on the state roster • Dimensioned deck plan and elevations ready for structural review • Site survey showing setbacks, easements, and existing structures • Frost-depth compliance verified for all footings • Snow loads matched to the site jurisdiction • Ledger connection to the house detailed and verified • Engineer confirms they'll respond to plan-check corrections on sealed sheets • Seal shows name, Illinois PE number, and date on every sealed sheet
