Is an Engineer Stamp Required for My ADU Project in Michigan?

By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15

Usually yes — Michigan municipalities generally require a Michigan-licensed PE to seal the structural sheets for an ADU, including foundations, framing, and load-bearing alterations. Deep frost depth and heavy snow are the signature Michigan issues. Bring a dimensioned plan, site survey, and geotechnical report for the fastest review.

Michigan ADU Stamp Requirements

Michigan's municipalities — Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Ann Arbor — review structural drawings for accessory dwellings under the Michigan Residential Code, and the PE seal is the standard requirement. The seal must show the engineer's name, Michigan PE number, and date, and the engineer must be in responsible charge of the engineering. Detached ADUs, garage conversions, and in-law additions are treated the same at the structural level. Owner-builders don't escape the requirement: the building department asks for the seal regardless of who drafted the plans.

What the Michigan ADU Structural Review Involves

The engineer reviews the floor plan and elevations, designs the foundation below the deep frost line — Upper Peninsula frost and snow get extra attention — sizes beams, headers, and the lateral system, and checks heavy snow and wind design per the Michigan Residential Code. Garage conversions get extra scrutiny because the existing slab was rarely designed as a dwelling foundation. Bring the site survey, the geotechnical report, and the architectural plans. Frost-depth compliance is the item most ADU plans miss.

Your Michigan ADU Stamping Checklist

Use this checklist before engaging an engineer for your ADU: • Engineer of record holds an active Michigan PE license, verifiable on the state roster • Dimensioned floor plan and elevations ready for structural review • Site survey showing setbacks, easements, and existing structures • Frost-depth compliance verified for footings, plumbing, and equipment • Snow loads matched to the site jurisdiction • Garage conversions: existing slab evaluated for dwelling loads • Engineer confirms they'll respond to plan-check corrections on sealed sheets • Seal shows name, Michigan PE number, and date on every sealed sheet

What else do project teams ask?

Does a garage conversion ADU need an engineer stamp in Michigan?
Almost always. The existing garage slab was designed for vehicles, not a dwelling — the engineer must evaluate and usually upgrade the foundation, and the municipality requires the sealed structural sheets.
Why does frost depth matter for Michigan ADUs?
Michigan's deep frost line means footings must go well below grade. Shallow prescriptive foundations heave and crack — the engineer designs specifically for frost protection.
Do Upper Peninsula ADUs need different review?
The sealed-package requirement is the same, but frost depth and snow loads are more severe up north. The engineer designs for the site's actual conditions.
What slows down ADU permits in Michigan?
Missing frost-depth compliance, unverified snow loads, and unevaluated garage slabs. Bring the survey and soil data and the review moves fastest.
