Can I Get a PE Stamp for My Existing Home Plans in Indiana?

By Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder, Apex Grid Engineering — USAF Veteran. · Updated 2026-09-15

Yes — an Indiana-licensed PE can seal existing home plans after independent review, recalculation, and revision. The engineer must be in responsible charge; rubber-stamping another's design is prohibited. Complete drawings, the geotechnical report, and the design loads used make the review fastest. Apex Grid Engineering assigns Indiana-licensed engineers for existing-plan reviews.

I'm Jeremy Mills, CEO & Founder of Apex Grid Engineering and a U.S. Air Force veteran. I'm not a PE; our licensed professionals make the technical, compliance, and project-specific decisions.

Illustrative diagram of the professional engineer review and seal workflow: drawings are reviewed against a checklist, sealed by a licensed PE, and issued as a permit set.

Indiana Responsible-Charge Requirements

Indiana requires the sealing engineer to be in responsible charge of the engineering — the engineer must have exercised engineering judgment over the design. For existing plans, this means independent verification: the engineer recalculates structural elements, checks code compliance under the Indiana Residential and Building Codes, and revises the drawings as needed before sealing. The seal must show the engineer's name, Indiana PE number, and date. Indiana engineers cannot seal work outside their area of competence. Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, and South Bend review the sealed package.

What the Indiana Existing-Plan Review Involves

The review starts with the full drawing set: architectural, structural, foundation, and any prior calculations. The engineer checks the design against the design loads — frost depth and snow are the signature issues — verifies foundation design per the geotechnical report, and recalculates beams, columns, foundations, and the lateral system. The New Madrid zone is checked in the southwestern counties. Deficiencies get redlined; the drawings are revised until the engineer can take professional responsibility. Bring the geotechnical report, the design criteria, and any prior plan-check comments. Incomplete documentation is the biggest delay.

Your Indiana Existing-Plans Stamping Checklist

Use this checklist before engaging an engineer for existing plans: • Engineer of record holds an active Indiana PE license, verifiable on the state roster • Plans are complete: architectural, structural, foundation, and prior calculations • Frost-depth compliance verified for footings, plumbing, and equipment • Snow loads match the site jurisdiction • Geotechnical report addresses local soils for the specific site • Prior plan-check comments included so corrections aren't repeated • Engineer confirms they'll respond to plan-check corrections on sealed sheets • Seal shows name, Indiana PE number, and date on every sealed sheet

What else do project teams ask?

Can an Indiana engineer stamp plans they didn't draw?
Yes, provided the engineer performs an independent review, recalculates key elements, revises the drawings as needed, and takes responsible charge of the design. Sealing without that work is prohibited.
Does the New Madrid zone affect Indiana projects?
Yes. Southwestern Indiana's seismic demand means the reviewing engineer checks the seismic design category for projects in that region — a requirement many existing plans miss.
Will the municipality accept a stamp on contractor-drawn plans?
Yes — if the seal is from an Indiana-licensed PE in responsible charge. The municipality reviews the sealed package, not who drafted it. The engineer's seal is what makes the engineering enforceable.
What slows down existing-plan reviews in Indiana?
Missing frost-depth compliance, unverified design loads, and absent geotechnical data. Bring the complete set of documentation and the review moves fastest.
