Can a PE practice engineering across state lines?

A PE may need authorization in each jurisdiction where regulated engineering practice occurs, even when design work is coordinated remotely from another location. The relevant board rules can depend on the project location, the service being offered, the engineer's discipline and competence, the firm's status, and whether the work is temporary or ongoing. A license in one state does not itself authorize practice everywhere. Confirm the current board requirements before offering or sealing work; the AHJ separately decides what it will accept in a permit submission.

The correct application of cross-state engineering practice starts with the actual project, not a generic promise. Confirm the jurisdiction, adopted code, design scope, existing conditions, required deliverables, and professional responsibility before relying on a conclusion. A responsible engineer documents assumptions and identifies information that still needs verification.

Project type, occupancy, existing construction, site conditions, code edition, agency requirements, and changes made after the original design can change the work. A concise answer is useful for orientation, but the signed or sealed project record must reflect the current scope and the authority's process.
